Troop 230 advancement process is multi-faceted with the goal of supporting and guiding the development of Boy Scouts as they progress through their Scouting careers.
The ranks of Tenderfoot, Second Class and First Class involve demonstrating mastery of increasingly complex scouting skills.
The senior ranks of Star, Life and Eagle involve demonstrating mastery of leadership skills as well as earning required and elective merit badges that assist in developing a well-rounded individual.
A critical part of advancement for all ranks is commitment to the troop, the patrol, the community and the ideals of scouting.
Once a Boy Scout has completed the basic requirements of a rank he must participate in a Scoutmaster conference during which he and the Scoutmaster discuss a number of things including the Scout’s development and his goals for scouting.
After the Scoutmaster conference the Boy Scout approaches a member of the advancement committee and requests a Board of Review. The Board of Review is a committee of three or more adult members of the Troop who interview the Boy Scout to understand if his achievements and development warrant advancement to the sought after rank. Following a successful Board of Review the Boy Scout is advanced to the higher rank.
There are instances where the Board of Review may not recommend that the Scout move to the higher rank. In these instances the Scout will be given specific reasons for the decision and will be given specific direction to achieve a successful Board of Review. This direction will include the time frame for a follow-up Board of Review.
